Edinburgh University's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine will join with the Roslin Institute by a £100m investment.
The Roslin Institute will be twice the size when the development is finished. It will move to a £58.5m building next to the Edinburgh vet school at Easter Bush, Midlothian. The plans are to finish the development by 2010.
Part of the Institute's work includes finding out about food safety issues and preventing and treating animal diseases. Researchers created the first mammal to be cloned in 1996, Dolly the sheep.
